On March 30, 2017, FirstNet announced the selection of AT&T as its national partner to design and deploy the FirstNet nationwide public safety broadband network. The award decision was a significant milestone event, a culmination of five years of planning and preparations since FirstNet was established and charged with overseeing the deployment of a nationwide public safety broadband network.

RFP Process

Leading up to the award was the release of the FirstNet request for proposal (RFP), which was the product of an iterative process by FirstNet through engagement and consultation with all 56 state and territories to determine performance objectives for the network that would address the needs and challenges of public safety nationwide.

AT&T All-Band Solution

AT&T was selected over Rivada Mercury and pdvWireless for the contract to design and deploy the FirstNet Network, worth up to $100B over 25 years. AT&T met all RFP objectives and proposed an all-band solution that offers public safety priority and preemption across AT&T’s entire LTE network nationwide, providing immediate benefits over building out a new Band 14 network solely with the 20MHz of dedicated spectrum provided by FirstNet.
